How does an air-to-air heat pump work?

An air-to-air heat pump works by transferring heat between the indoor and outdoor air using a refrigerant cycle.

When heating, it extracts naturally occurring heat from outdoor air, compresses it to increase temperature, and releases it indoors through a unit inside your home.

On the other hand, the heat pump can be used in summer heat for cooling, by reversing the process, thus removing heat from indoor air and releasing it outside to cool the indoor space.

This creates an efficient heat exchange that allows for both heating and cooling of indoor spaces using electricity, making it an energy-efficient system.

Advantages of air-to-air heat pumps

  • Save money: an air-to-air heat pump can significantly reduce your overall heating costs in the long run.
  • Simple installation: a simpler installation process compared to other types of heat pump.
  • Heating and cooling: the same system can heat your home in winter and cool it in summer, so it works year-round.
  • Longevity: air-to-air heat pumps have a long lifespan, and once installed they require little upkeep or maintenance.
  • Increase property value: switching from an older heating system can raise your BER rating — a national SEAI analysis of almost 50,000 home sales found each BER grade improvement added an average 2.7% to the final sale price.
  • Environmentally friendly: investing in a heat pump lowers your carbon footprint by using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.

How much does an air-to-air heat pump cost?

Air-to-air heat pumps can cost between €5,000 - €15,000, depending on the heat pump you choose and the number of indoor units you require.

This is the average total cost for both the heat pump hardware itself and the installation work carried out by a contractor.

SEAI offers €3,500 towards your air-to-air heat pump. If you're switching from oil, gas, solid fuel, or electric storage heating, you could get up to €7,500 in total support.

Is an air-to-air heat pump right for me?

Installing an air-to-air heat pump can benefit homeowners and businesses by lowering their energy bills, reducing their carbon footprint, and ultimately enjoying a comfortable indoor climate.

Whilst air-to-air heat pumps work with most property types, their efficiency is greater in open-plan areas. Air-to-air heat pumps don’t transfer the heat they produce into radiators or underfloor heating. For this, you would need an air-to-water heat pump.

Factors such as building size, existing heating systems, and budget considerations should all be taken into account when deciding whether to invest in an air-to-air heat pump.
